LARGE SPORTSMAN’S KNIFE – closed length of 4 inches or more. Two backsprings.
Blades and tools on the underside open from both ends.
M.33 Maker: not known. The mark side tangs of
the main spear blade and the pen blade
(broken) on the underside are stamped
with the name and address of London
retailer "RICHARD MELHUSH LTD.
FETTERLANE HOLBORN E. C.”
This knife includes a cap lifter tool that
dates it to post-World War 1.
Maker: "BEACH SALISBURY" is stamped on the mark side of the turnscrew tool. The two blades and the button hook show no discernible stamping.
Name options:
1. "BEACH" is the name of a retailer based in Salisbury, and therefore the knife was probably made in Sheffield,
2. "BEACH" was a knife manufacturer located in Salisbury - when Salisbury was in competition with Sheffield up until the early to mid-19th Century. Levine 4 (page 101) identifies a William Beach who was a cutler in Catherine Street from 1829 - 1880.
well used but in working condition
Maker: “COLQUHOUN & CADMAN
SHEFFIELD” is stamped on the mark side
of the sawblade and the turnscrew,
together with the “GO AHEAD” trademark
in the pile side. None of the other blades
or tools are stamped. The knife has a
closed length of 3 ½ inches (9.4cm) ivory
scales, brass liners, nickel silver
shoulders, pins, shield, and shackle. The
slide-out tools are pick and tweezer.
Based on information from Tweedale it is
assumed that this knife dates prior to
1907
Maker: "T. TURNER & Co. CUTLERS TO HIS MAJESTY" stamped on the mark side tang of the main spear blade and the saw blade. The mark side tang of the pen blade is stamped "ENCORE OIL JOINTS SHEFFIELD". The closed length is 3¾ inches (9.2cm), with ivory scales, nickel silver shoulders, pins, and shackle; three brass liners - and one iron liner that extends past the shoulder to form a turn screw. T
his pattern was featured in both the 1902 and 1925 Thomas Turner trade catalogues.
MEDIUM SIZED SPORTSMAN’S KNIVES – closed length of 3 - 4 inches. Two backsprings.
Blades and tools on the underside open from both ends.
M.16 Maker: “G. BUTLER &Co. SHEFFIELD” is
stamped on the tang of both blades.
Maker: "G. IBBERSON & Co. SHEFFIELD ENG" is stamped on the mark side tang of the main blade, and the pile side is stamped "[violin trademark] SHEFFIELD MADE". The mark side tangs of the pen blade, the turnscrew, and the tin opener are all stamped "G. IBBERSON & Co.
SHEFFIELD ENG"
Maker: THOMAS TURNER & Co. although the stamping is unclear in parts. The main blade is stamped but is not discernible. The button hook and turnscrew are stamped
"[trademark] ENCORE T. TURNER & Co.". and the pen blade is stamped "ENCORE OIL JOINTS SHEFFIELD". The knife has a closed length of 3 ½ inches, stag horn scales, brass liners, and nickel silver bolsters, pins, and shield.
Maker: "R. McQUEEN & SON
NEWCASTLE" is stamped on the tang of all blades and tool on the underside. 4 rows of tools each side in good working condition
Maker: not known. The mark side tangs of all blades and tools on the underside are stamped with the name and address of London retailer "G. BARRETT & Co. 158
STRAND", and their pile side tangs are stamped "SHEFFIELD MADE".
stag scales in good working order
Maker: "BROOKSBANK SHEFFIELD" stamped on the tang of both the main spear blade and the pen blade. The knife has a closed length of 3 ½ inches (8.9cm), jigged bone scales, brass liners, and nickel silver pins, shield, and shackle.
Maker: the main blade face is stamped
"[trademark]" with "ENCORE" below, and the tang is stamped "THOMAS TURNER & Co. SHEFFIELD". The pen blade and the button hook are stamped "[trademark]
ENCORE THOMAS TURNER & Co.
SHEFFIELD" on their mark side tang.
defects small piece of scale missing see photos for details
Maker: "JAMESON" is stamped on the mark side tang of both blades, and the main sheepfoot blade is stamped "SHEFFIELD MADE" on the pile side tang.
Maker: "ABRAM BROOKSBANK SHEFFIELD" is stamped on the mark side tang of the three blades on the underside. Their pile side tangs are stamped "[cannon mark] DEFIANCE".
The knife has a closed length of 4 ½ inches (11.5cm), chequered horn scales, brass liners, and nickel silver pins, shield, shoulders and shackle.
This knife could date from the 1890s however the absence of a button hook suggests a later date - even the 1920s.
Maker: “C + C JOSEPH ELLIOT & SONS
SHEFFIELD” is stamped on the mark side
tang of all blades/tools on the underside
which consist of a main spear blade saw
blade, stubby turnscrew, pen blade (broken)
and button hook. The top side has a
corkscrew, gimlet, and triangular awl. The
knife has a closed length of 4½ inches
(11.5cm), chequered horn scales, brass
liners (with the inner two being milled), and
nickel silver shoulders, pins, shield, and
shackle. It is probable that this knife dates
from the 1880s
Maker: “M [banner TRUSTWORTHY]
MAPPIN & WEBB SHEFFIELD” is stamped
on the sawblade, the turnscrew, and
button hook. The stamping on the main
spear-blade tang is partially obscured
however “M. DYSON SHEFFIELD
ENGLAND” is discernible.
Maker: assumed to be GEORGE
IBBERSON & CO. as the pile side of the main blade is stamped "[violin trademark] SHEFFIELD" - the violin trademark being a known Ibberson mark.
The main blade mark side tang is stamped "HARRODS BROMPTON Rd. S.
W" although the last two letters are unclear. The mark side tangs of the pen blade and the button hook are stamped
"HARRODS LTD."
An identical knife is illustrated in a
"Joseph Elliot & Sons" undated trade catalogue but assumed to date from the early 1900's - see "19th & early 20th
Century British Sportsmen's Knives PART
2." Collector Note at www.cask.info at
"2.2.1 Double-ended Sportsmen's Knives of the 'non-horseman' style"
Maker: "MILLIKIN & LAWLEY 168 STRAND" stamped on the tangs of all three blades on the underside. The blades are: sheepfoot main blade, a combination saw/file/turnscrew, and pen blade. The underside contains a quadrangular reamer, borer, and corkscrew; the slide out tools are a gun pick and tweezer. The closed length is 3 ¾ inches (9.8cm), with stag horn scales and integral iron liners and bolsters. Flook's
"TLKB" entry for Millikin states that he was a
"Surgical Instrument Maker and Cutler" who operated from various London addresses and under a variety of names, the last being
"1860 - 1870 as MILLIKIN & LAWLEY, 161A STRAND. Does not appear after 1870 as a Cutler but continued as a surgical instrument maker into 1880".
Maker: "V ฿R SUPERIOR CUTLERY" is stamped on the tang of the main blade, the saw blade, and the file/manicure tool. "J.
NOWILL & SONS SHEFFIELD ENGLAND" is stamped on the tang of the pen blade however it is likely that this is a replacement.
The closed length is 3 5/8 inches (9.3cm), with stag horn scales, integral iron liners and bolsters, and five back springs. The blades are - sheepfoot, pen, saw, button hook, and nail file. The tools are - quadrangular reamer, borer, pick, sacking needle, corkscrew, and extra-wide hoof pick having the same width as the five back springs. One slide-out tool is missing
defects small part of scales missing see photos for more details
Maker: "STRINGER [logo]" stamped on the face of the main blade and "STRINGER SHEFFIELD" stamped on the mark side tang. It has a closed length of 3 ½ inches (8.9cm), cow horn scales, iron liners and nickel silver pins. Tweedale's Directory notes that the Stringer family were active in the cutlery trade "since at least 1774", however it appears that the distinctive logo (as stamped on the blade) was acquired by other makers and used well into the 20th century. Based on the style of the knife, it is probably that the knife dates circa late-19th century to circa early-20th century.
Maker: The only stamping is "|*XL" on the face of the main spear blade, and there is evidence of stamping on the tang but nothing legible. There is no evidence of stamping on the pen blade. "|*XL" is a trademark of George Wostenholm.
stag scales. 3.5 cm length
Maker: "EDGER ALLEN & Co. LTD.
SHEFFIELD" is stamped on the tang of both the main and pen blade. The knife has a closed length of 3¾ inches (9.2cm), jigged bone scales, brass liners, and nickel silver pins and shield. Tweedale Notes in relation to "pocket knives" that "These products would have been factored by Allen's and were probably marketed up to the 1930s
Maker: "WELLS 431 STRAND" stamped on the tangs of all blades. This knife is of a similar style to the above knife, having a closed length of 4¼ inches (10.9cm) and, more significantly, it has a marline spike instead of the hoof pick.
Flook's "TLKB" entry for "WELLS, BENJAMIN BLAKE" states that he was a "Cutler and Desk and Dressing Case maker" at both 431
STRAND and various other addresses between c. 1850 to c. 1912. It is conceivable that this WELLS knife was made for them in Sheffield by Mappin Brothers or Joseph Rodgers, and dates c. 1860 - 1870
defects large part of scales missing see photos.
Maker: "WRAGGS HARWOOD St.
SHEFFIELD" is stamped on all blades and tools on the underside.
The tangs of the two tools on the topside are embellished with diagonal grooves.
"HARRISON BROTHERS & HOWSON" is stamped on the mark side tang of the main blade, and pile side tang is stamped "SHEFFIELD ENGLAND".
Maker: "HERBERT ROBINSON SHEFFIELD" is stamped on the tang of both the main blade and the pen blade. It has a closed length of 3 3/8 inches (8.2cm), cow horn scales, iron bolsters and liners and a nickel silver shackle.
Maker: "JOSEPH RODGERS & SONS"
stamped on the face of the main heavily worn sheepfoot blade, and "No. 6 NORFOLK ST.
SHEFFIELD" stamped on the mark side tang.
The saw blade and the pen blade (also heavily worn) stamped "RODGERS CUTLERS TO HIS MAJESTY" on the mark side tang. The knife has a closed length of 4 ¾ inches (12cm), stag scales, and steel liners and bolsters. The pins and name plate are nickel silver.
This knife is illustrated in the Joseph Rodgers 1912 trade catalogue as pattern P.1985. The same knife is illustrated in "Levine's Guide 4th edition..." page 266.
Maker: "J. BEAL & SONS SHEFFIELD" is stamped on all blades and tools on the underside - being a hawkbill main blade, saw blade, button hook, pen blade, and nail file.
The tools on the topside are: quadrangular reamer, screwdriver, hoof pick, drill, and corkscrew. The slide-out tools are a tweezer and picker. The knife has a length closed of 3 ½ inches (8.9cm), stag horn scales, brass liners, and nickel silver pins, bolsters, and shield.
defects main blade as drop.
Maker: “ARMY & NAVY C. S.L.” is stamped
on the tang of both the main and pen Blades that show some wear. Checkered buffalo scales.
Maker: The main spear blade, saw blade, and pen blade are all tang stamped
"FINNIGANS" on the mark side and
"MANCHESTER & LIVERPOOL" on the pile side tang.
It is safe to assume that Finnigans were a retailer operating in Manchester and Liverpool and it is highly probably that the knife was made in Sheffield under contract by Francis Newton & Sons,
In good working order
Maker: Maker: not known, but possibly
‘George Butler Sheffield’. Closed length of
3 ½ inches (8.9cm), ivory scales, brass
and steel liners, nickel silver pins and
shield.
“WOOD” is stamped on the tang of the
main cutting blade, and “WOOD
LIVERPOOL” stamped on the other
blades/implements on the underside.
‘Wood’ is believed to have been a retailer
in Liverpool and also Manchester.
Apart from its small size, it is a fully
featured sportsman’s knife – including
foldout 6-inch nickel silver ruler and
tortoise shell toothpick. An interesting
feature is the flat ‘file’ that is incised into
the frame on the topside is possibly a
friction striking surface for phosphorus

Maker: "THOMAS WILSON SHEFFIELD" is stamped on the mark side tang. It has a closed length of 4 5/8 inches, hard wood scales, integral steel liners and bolsters, and hand-forged tapered backspring. The butt end is factory-drilled for a lanyard.
Tweedale has an entry for Thomas Wilson which indicates that "the business apparently began in 1889"
In good working order flat fibre scales. Tellin & co
Maker: "JOSEPH TARRATT & SONS" is stamped on the mark side tang in a very small font size. It has a closed length of 4 ½ inches, stag horn scales, integral steel liners and bolsters, and hand-forged tapered backspring. The butt end is drilled for a lanyard. The blade has lost 40% to 50% of its profile due to wear and sharpening however most likely started out as a sheepfoot blade with a more gentle slope to the point (with similarities to the Wharncliffe style blade)". Tweedale makes no mention of the maker and neith does Flook in "The London Knife Book"
". No other details have been discovered
Maker: " BUCK & HICKMAN LIMITED LONDON" is stamped on the mark side tang.
It has a closed length of 4 5/8 inches, stag horn scales, non-integral steel liners, nickel silver bolsters, and a steel shackle and pin.
Ron Flook in his "The London Knife Book"i notes that the company had been in business in London from at least 1839 and were operating as "saw and tool makers" The style of the knife, such as the nickle silver bolsters, suggests a date of early - to mid-20th century. It is also possible that the knife was made in Sheffield for Buck & Hickman.
Maker: not stated, although the mark side scale is embossed with the 'kettle' trademark which belonged to "JOSEPH HAYWOOD & Co", "... which had been granted in 1860' (Tweedale). This mark, in a simpler form, had been owned by Geo.
Hinchliffe who was the uncle of Joseph Haywood and by 1850 "Haywood owned the name" (Tweedale) and presumably the
'Kettle' trademark also. There is no stamping of any type on the blade which was common in the mid-1800s. It has a closed length of 4 5/8 inches, polished buffalo horn scales, integral steel liners and bolsters, and a hand-forged tapered backspring. The blade has lost much of its original profile due to use and sharpening however there is no doubt that it was originally a sheep foot blade
knife is lacking snap though stays open and closed.
Wood scales but think been changed at some time in distant past. In working condition blade shows seems of sharpening.
Pattern 9403/1917. "Knives, Clasp with Tin Opener and Fibre Scales". (i.e. no marline spike) made by the American cutlery manufacturer "E.C.
SIMMONDS KEEN KUTTER ST. LOUIS U.S.A."
Maker: “E.C. SIMMONS
KEEN KUTTER ST. LOUIS
U.S.A.” stamped on the
blade mark side tang,
and “OIL THE JOINTS”
stamped on the tin
opener. The knife has a closed length of 4 7/8 inches which is consistent with the “A.C.D.
685” specification, as required.
An identical knife, except with a different style of tin opener is shown in the E.C. SIMMONS
KEEN KUTTER 1917 catalogue (page 2334, and are the only known knives that conform with
9403/1917 description.

Maker:
"CAMERON & Co. MADE IN ENGLAND" is stamped on the mark side tang of the blade.
Moulded bexoid scales and steel shackle.
Tweedale has no mention of Cameron & Co., and it is interesting that the stamping is "Made in England" with no mention of Sheffield
Lots of military dealers describe these as ww2 commando knives to achieve high prices but in fact a electrician knife made for governments atomic energy authority
Maker: "H. ROWBOTHAM & Co.
(SHEFFIELD) Ltd". Post-WW2
"Electrician Knife" made for the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority with
U.K.A.E.A. stamped on the main blade.
Maker: The mark
side tang is stamped with what appears to be a trademark
"PREMIER LIFE
TIME
SHEFFIELD
ENGLAND" and the pile side tang is stamped "53K
SHEFFIELD
ENGLAND". The knife has jigged and dyed bone scales, brass liners, nickel silver scales and pins, and a steel shackle.
There appears to be no mention of any of these marks in Tweedale. Ron
Flook, in his recently self-published book Knives and Daggers of the SOE includes a photo (page 23) of a very similar knife captioned "(2.13)
Possible model for Knife, Dagger, Jack", with the suggestion that "it is possible these reflect the type of commercial knife first used.
"PREMIER" is a trademark of
Francis Newton & Son

PREMIER" was a trademark of Francis Newton & Son and was purchased by Geo. Butler in 1932. It was also used by the “Premier Cutlery Co. Ltd Toronto, and the possibility has been raised that the knife may have originated from them and been sourced from a German manufacturer”.
Maker: "A.
WRIGHT & SON
Ltd. SHEFFIELD" is stamped on the mark side tang of the blade.
If this is correct this would be a post-WW2 made knife. It has bexoid (or similar) scales, nickel silver bolsters and pins, and steel shackle.
Tweedale notes that
"A. Wright & Sons was established in 1947 at Midland Works," and that "It continued to sell pocket knives in 2022"
Maker: "HARRISON
BROTHERS & HOWSON" is stamped on the mark side tang and is the only stamping on the knife. It has a closed length of 4 5/8 inches, stag scales, sheepfoot blade and marline spike, steel liners, a strong copper shackle with a steel pin. The time frame for this knife is c. 1910 to early 1930s
AP301
Maker: "C++X [trademark]
LOCKWOOD BROTHERS
SHEFFIELD" is stamped on the mark side of the blade. The pile side of the blade face is marked (possibly with an electric pen)
"Z459". Moulded bexoid scales and steel shackle.
This knife appears to be unused and unsharpened. It possible that it is post-WW2 made.
