‘George Butler Sheffield’. Closed length of

3 ½ inches (8.9cm), ivory scales, brass

and steel liners, nickel silver pins and

shield.

“WOOD” is stamped on the tang of the

main cutting blade, and “WOOD

LIVERPOOL” stamped on the other

blades/implements on the underside.

‘Wood’ is believed to have been a retailer

in Liverpool and also Manchester.

Apart from its small size, it is a fully

featured sportsman’s knife – including

foldout 6-inch nickel silver ruler and

tortoise shell toothpick. An interesting

feature is the flat ‘file’ that is incised into

the frame on the topside is possibly a

friction striking surface for phosphorus
